Mercator Ocean International to coordinate European Digital Ocean Pavilion at United Nations Ocean Conference

Mercator Ocean International will coordinate the design and installation of a European Digital Ocean Pavilion at the Third Edition of the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) from 28 May to 15 June 2025 in Nice, France.

France and Costa Rica will co-host the 2025 UN Ocean Conference from 9 to 13 June 2025. This high-level event will focus on the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.

In support of this initiative, Mercator Ocean will be conducting the coordination on behalf of the European Commission DG DEFIS and in partnership with DG RTD, DG MARE, and DG INTPA. This collaboration underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing ocean conservation challenges.

The European Digital Ocean Pavilionwill be located in the Green Zone at UNOC3, an open exhibition area accessible to civil society, academia, and artists for hosting events and exhibitions.

The Pavilion will invite attendees to an immersive and interactive gateway into the Copernicus Marine Service ocean knowledge and the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean, showcasing Europe’s leadership in ocean governance and action for a sustainable blue future.

European Digital Ocean Pavilion explained

The Pavilion serves to:

  • Showcase EU flagship Ocean programmes, missions and operational services.
  • Highlight the EU’s contribution to the United Nations Agenda 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals, and beyond.
  • Promote the EU’s authoritative voice on international ocean governance for the implementation of EU/international ocean, biodiversity and climate policies.
  • Provide a space for a dynamic and well-coordinated EU ocean community.

The Pavilion will be composed of three areas:

INSPIRE: ocean talks that make waves

An open forum for short presentations on major ocean-related themes, including biodiversity, marine pollution, rising sea levels, ocean warming, and coastal challenges.

It will consist of morning and afternoon sessions, with the afternoon sessions focused on actions taken by the European Commission to address the major themes. A detailed programme for the morning and afternoon sessions in the European Digital Pavilion will be published in March.

Additionally: A media corner for journalists and media.

ENGAGE: dive into digital experiences

An immersive exhibition guiding visitors through digital experiences, offering insights into ocean monitoring, its value chain, and other aspects of ocean life. This zone will echo the themes addressed in the INSPIRE area and will feature several solutions and ideas presented by European Digital Ocean stakeholders and the wider community.

DECIDE: monitor the state of the ocean

A command centre showcasing the EU Digital Ocean to decision-makers, leveraging the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean to support sustainable ocean actions.
