The Digital Twin Ocean Summit is an international meeting led by the UN Decade Digital Twins of the Oceans (DITTO) Programme with support from the G7 FSOI resource strategy group. The UK will host an in person summit in London which will be livestreamed. The summit will be accompanied by a programme of virtual satellite events hosted by GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel.

This summit will bring together the multi-stakeholder community and potential users, providers / developers and promoters of digital ocean initiatives and address the various components to achieve a Digital Twin Framework of the Ocean by 2030.

The objective of the summit is to:

• advance community understanding of Digital Twins, their applications and benefits,
• bring together the users and developers to learn how digital twins may benefit society,
• share knowledge about Digital Twins and best practice

Mercator Ocean leadership in building a European Digital Twin of the Ocean

As a world leader in operational oceanography and implementor of the European Copernicus Marine Service, Mercator Ocean International is now taking a leading role in federating the European communities to build a European Digital Twin of the Ocean. Leveraging on European innovations and existing assets, the European Digital Twin Ocean is main element of the Digital Ocean Knowledge System under the EU Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters. In response to the EU Mission and to the call made at the One Ocean Summit on 11 February 2022 in Brest (France) towards the building the European Digital Twin Ocean,  Mercator Ocean International hosted the Digital Ocean Forum from 20 to 21 April 2022 under the auspices of the European Commission and the French Ministry of the Sea, in the frame of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

MOi will also work in close coordination with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable through the DITTO programme to achieve an international framework for Digital Twins of the Ocean. The DITTO summit is supported by the G7 FSOI, for which Mercator Ocean International hosts the EU coordination. Yann Drillet, head of operational oceanography at MOi will speak about advanced modelling core engines for the European Digital Twin Ocean in session 3 and take part in the panel discussion on models and data sciences in digital twins. Enrique Alvarez, from MOi, will provide insights on ocean predictive models and capabilities in the closing session of the event as part of the recommendations and readout from the DITTO Working Group Chairs on achieving a DITTO framework.
