The European Maritime Day (EMD) is an annual event gathering Europe’s maritime community together over two days to network, discuss and outline joint action on maritime affairs and sustainable blue economy. Organised by the European Commission, the City of Brest, the Region of Brittany, the department of Finistère and the General Secretariat for the Sea, EMD 2023 will take place at the ” BREST EXPO – Parc des Expositions de Penfel”, in Brest, France.
High level sessions will focus on new approaches to a sustainable blue economy, maritime security and innovation in the blue economy. The EMD will also feature thematic workshops, pitch sessions, a special session on fisheries and an exhibition. The EMD welcomes professionals from businesses, governments, public institutions, NGOs and academia as well as EU citizens interested in the ocean and marine ecosystems. The event is in-person with only the opening session and the following high-level session available via webstreaming.

What is a Digital Twin of the Ocean?
The stand will serve to showcase the European Commission’s vision and commitment to develop the Digital Twin of the Ocean, as announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the One Ocean Summit in Brest, February 2022:
The ocean is still largely a great mystery for humankind. That is why Europe is building a digital twin of the ocean. We are connecting our assets – like the Copernicus satellites, marine infrastructure like icebreakers, buoys and underwater drones, and high-performance computing. We will gather the raw data and turn it into real-time knowledge and longer-term predictions. We are putting the power of the digital revolution at the service of our climate. […] Thanks to the EU and its Member States, a digital twin should be operational by 2024. It will make ocean knowledge open-access, available to citizens, scientists and policymakers around the world. It will be a platform for global cooperation.
The stand will feature state-of-the-art research and innovation projects working towards developing the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean, principally EDITO-Infra and EDITO-Model Lab. These two core projects will develop the public infrastructure background and digital framework and next generation of ocean models to build the EU Digital Twin Ocean, leveraging on existing European science and assets. Other related EU R&D projects will also be invited to present at the stand including Iliad. The stand will also be an opportunity to share information about the second edition of the Digital Ocean Forum, set to take place mid-June 2023.
