OVERVIEW

The Digital Ocean Forum 2024, set to take place on June 13, 2024, under the auspices of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU, promises to be a pivotal event in the realm of ocean sustainability. Kicking off with a scientific workshop on June 12, attendees will engage in discussions and contribute feedback essential for shaping the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO), with insights from key figures like Pierre Bahurel of Mercator Ocean International.

Following this session, the main event will unveil the prototype of the European DTO, setting the stage for collaborative exploration and co-design among experts, stakeholders, policymakers, and interested citizens. President von der Leyen’s earlier announcement at the One Ocean Summit in 2022 laid the groundwork for this initiative, underlining the EU’s commitment to the Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters.

Co-organized with Mercator Ocean International and the Flanders Marine Institute, this forum will spotlight how the EU DTO aligns with the Green Deal and the UN Decade of Science for Sustainable Development. It will demonstrate the DTO’s potential to drive blue economies, support ocean conservation, and provide actionable knowledge for informed decision-making.
