We are pleased to announce that our Director General, Pierre Bahurel, will be participating in the 7th edition of the Forum Mondial de la Mer – Bizerte on September 13, 2024. This prestigious event, since its inception in 2018 under the presidency of Pascal Lamy, chair of the EU Mission “Restore our oceans and waters by 2030”, has become a pivotal platform for discussing marine issues of the basin on the southern shore of the Mediterranean.
Gathering stakeholders from both the Mediterranean coasts and the African continent at large, the Forum has significantly impacted Tunisia’s maritime sector, while leading to the creation of the “Coalition of Mediterranean Elected Officials” and the formulation of the “Bizerte Declaration”.
This year’s edition addresses the urgent challenges facing the Mediterranean region, including biodiversity loss and the need for sustainable solutions. The European Union will play a central role, aligning with its Green Pact and the mission to “Restore our oceans and waters by 2030.” With the participation of Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, Ambassador for the Poles and maritime issues, special envoy of the French President for the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, the Forum will further reflect on the pathway leading to Nice next June, and the opportunity to shed light on Mediterranean challenges during this international summit.
Pierre Bahurel will notably be part of the session “Quelle science pour l’Océan !?” (“What Science for the Ocean?”), to be opened by the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO Vidar Helgesen. Alongside committed experts, he will contribute to discussions on cutting-edge scientific approaches and will particularly highlight in a demonstration the potential of the European Digital Twin Ocean in providing efficient decision-making tools to better understand and manage the Ocean.
