Our Ocean Conference

Panama organizes the 8th “Our Ocean Conference”, with the objective to create a space for collaborative dialogue between policy makers, private sector, civil society, and academic institutions. The aim is to debate of how we can go through a sustainable use of marine resources and raise awareness about the emergency to take immediate action for our ocean.

CONTEXT

The Our Ocean Conferences were created to build partnerships between government, industry, science and civil society to meet the challenges facing the ocean. This year conference is taking place in Panama, March 2-3, 2023. With the theme “Our Ocean, Our Connection”, with the aim to showcase the critical importance of the implementation of well-connected systems of effective area-based management measures, including Marine Protected Areas, the development of the global blue economy and proposing innovative solutions to address marine pollution.

Attendees may include:

  • end users of ocean and coastal observations (fisheries, aquaculture, local authorities, etc.)
  • and other stakeholders.

EU COPERNICUS MARINE SIDE EVENT

The European Commission is organizing a side-event on March 2nd at 11:35pm (Panama time) centred on the Copernicus Marine Service implemented by Mercator Ocean International . The side event will feature several speakers including Enrique Alvarez Fanjul, Technical Coordinator of OceanPrediction Decade Collaborative Centre at Mercator Ocean International, as well as users from Panama and other Latin-American countries who will share their expertise in using Copernicus Marine data by presenting the following use cases:

  • Sargassum control by Shelly-Ann Cox, Sargassum Information hub, Bermuda Islands
  • Dynamic Risk Reduction by Omar Lizano, Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica.
