Artificial intelligence and other new technologies are promising to revolutionise our understanding of the ocean in the coming years. But the crucial element is data, and there’s an entire ocean of it to collect and process. To find out more, Euronews’ Denis Loctier travelled to the Adriatic and the North Sea, where he met some of the many scientists gathering data helping to build EU’s groundbreaking Digital Twin of the Ocean project. »

Mercator Ocean International plays a leading role in the EU DTO through its work in the EU-funded EDITO-Infra and EDITO-Models prgoramms. This article includes interviews with Pierre Bahurel, Director General at MOi, and Alain Arnaud, Head of Digital Ocean at MOi to discuss the cutting-edge technology behind the scenes and the importance of the EU DTO for policymakers and society at large. Simon Van Gennip, oceanographer at MOi provides a practical example of how it can be used to look at the plastic pollution crisis in the Ocean.
